Week 3

Lecture

Mr. Fauzi teached about the Marquee and Lasso tool in Adobe Photoshop. They are especially useful tools used to select and move objects around the image.

We also learnt how to use the pen tool to create different path shape and once again, Mr. Fauzi suggested us to play The Bezier Game to familiarise ourselves with the pen tool. The technique to use the pen tool is similar to the one in Adobe Illustrator.

Tutorial

Mr. Fauzi briefly demonstrated the use of Blending Mode, Paths, Masking and Layering in Adobe Photoshop.

Practical

Project 1: Physical Collage Design

Mr. Fauzi helped us to choose one final design from the 3 Pre-compositions we did in Week 2 to be amended. He guided me to rearrange my elements so they are more well placed around the spaces.

Chosen Pre-composition

Final Photo Collage

I chose this as my final design because Mr. Fauzi said it looks nice as the design's composition follows the Golden Ratio.

The Concept

This collage conveys the idea of waking up from the distractions of virtual or unrealistic experiences -- like excessive social media scrolling or any type of hypocrisy, that wastes or steals our time.

I created this piece as to advocate reminder against the new generation of people that spent most of their time on the internet, not knowing what they see is real or fake, to start reflexing and focus on the more important stuffs in life instead.

The Blue Box: Act as a border between the reality and the facades.

Fishhead Men in Suits: The fishheads symbolize the fantasy or alluring nature of online content, while they are wearing suits to imply a corporate or commercial motive behind these distractions. It also suggests that these distractions are often crafted with a commercial intent or are well planned, to captivate us while time slips away.

The Man: A central figure with the word "wake" pasted over his eyes, symbolizing the need to become aware and escape the illusion. His hand reaches out to touch one of the fishhead men, shows his attachment to the alluring facades of everything.

Another Fishhead Man touching the man: Implicates that the facades will always try to pull him back into obsession or deception.

The Clock:
Implicates that time is slipping away, or, the demand of our time.

Reflection

I really enjoyed the story ideation process because it gave me a chance to ponder on how to express my messages through design. I hope I keep creating designs that spread awareness and spark reflection within the community in the future as a designer.
