REFLECTION

Experience

The Advanced Typography module felt like a real step forward from the previous Typography course, with a much deeper dive into form, function, and real world application. From working with structured typographic systems, extracting shapes from the environment to building original typefaces and applying them in branding and highway signage, the process was both challenging and incredibly rewarding. Designing my own fonts gave me more confidence and unexpectedly sparked a genuine interest in font and brand mark design, two areas I now truly wanted to explore more.

Observation

This module exposed me to a wide range of typographic practices, learning to apply the eight typographic systems changed how I approach composition, they guide to give structure to my layouts and helped me be more intentional with alignment and hierarchy. One of the more unique experiences was designing letterforms inspired by shapes found in the environment, then applying them in a graphical poster, it taught me to see design possibilities in everyday surroundings.

We were also guided to build our own design identity, creating an Instagram account, designing a personal brandmark, and curating the visuals of the feeds collectively. This process helped me understand how typography works as part of digital branding, especially in an era where people rely heavily on digital media to inform their perceptions and consumption choices. The final project (redesigning a typeface for Malaysian highway signages), on the other hand, shifted my focus toward function and legibilty. It made me think less about expression and more about clarity, legibility, and user needs, especially when the typeface is perceived in real-world scenarios.

Findings

This module reinforced just how foundational typography is across majority areas of design. It’s not just about looking good, it’s also about establishing hierarchy, being legible, displays personality and communicating clearly whether it's in branding, layout, interfaces, or motion. I’ve become much more deliberate with type and about how letter spacing, colours and form all affect how something is read and felt.
