Week 9

Lecture

Mr. Fauzi explained the different art styles, including realism, surrealism, dadaism, and digital surrealism. He also taught ways to create surrealism artworks by using dream-like scenes, symbolic images, and mixing things together in unexpected or illogical ways to to evoke a sense of the uncanny and challenge conventional perceptions.

Practical

Project 2B: Poster Design

Required to create a poster design composition using elements of photography, typography and vector graphics. Photography is from DPI, typography and vector graphics is from IVN.

This week, we are required to create mockup poster sketches to visualise our quote.

Then, I drafted the digital poster based on my sketch using Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop.

Self Practice

I practiced Adobe Photoshop by creating a movie poster using online images. I cropped the subject with the Quick Selection tool and Refine Edge Brush.

I increased the contrast using the Levels to make the highlights stand out and used the Channels panel to select the white areas. By eye dropping colours from the midtones closest to the highlight, I filled the selected areas and dimmed the highlights with the Multiply blending mode.

I added shadows with the Brush tool and smoothed out edges of the shadows using Gaussian Blur to create a soft transition between areas. Finally, I added typography I made from Adobe Illustrator.

Reflection

The self-practice has helped me to get more familiar with the lighting adjustments and selection tools in Adobe Photoshop. By experimenting with different techniques, I learned how to blend elements smoothly and adjust lighting to make image look realistic when put together. This self practice has been incredibly valuable, especially for the poster design project, as it sharpened my skills with lighting adjustments and selection tools, enabling me to create a more cohesive and polished design.
