Task 2 - Visual Design Publication
Throughout the dissertation journey, which spanned two semesters in the modules, Design Research Methodology in the previous semester and Design Research Dissertation in this semester, I made a lot of mistakes as a research beginner. But with Dr. Wong and Dr. Mike’s guidance, I learned a great deal about the structure of research and the precision of academic language. I also realised that research isn’t just about critiquing others’ literature, it’s equally about consistently critiquing your own findings.
This has been such an important experience in understanding the process of justifying a hypothesis and recognising why that matters. In my case, I believe my study will contribute meaningfully to UI/UX knowledge by providing insights into how users perceive and interact with loading interfaces.
Reminded of a quote by British philosopher, Ludwig Wittgenstein: "The limits of my language mean the limits of my world.", for me, the biggest lesson from this journey is how crucial language is in communicating ideas effectively. Being able to clearly explain research decisions, justify design hypotheses, and critically reflect on findings has been just as important as the research itself. Without precise language, it can be difficult to fully express observations or the nuances of my findings, and the insights and potential impact of the study could easily be misunderstood or overlooked. As a result, I have been consistently working on improving my language skills throughout the research process, and while there’s still a lot I could improve (sometimes limited by time), I see it as a lifelong skill to keep developing.
Overall, this research journey has made me appreciate not only the mechanics of research but also the responsibility that comes with conveying knowledge accurately. Looking forward, I aim to carry these skills into my future work as a UI/UX designer so I can communicate research insights clearly and translate them into more meaningful design solutions.
